You say it’s your birthday… February 19 brings another year chalked up to Marie McHale, Sara Potoker, and Laura Martineau. Give a shout out on February 20 to Tom Caron, Donna Rozman, Honeydew Murray, Diana Glazer, Slater Weil, and Don Haver. Ben Arwood-Levine, Abby Hird, and Cara Cunningham share their cake on February 21. Nicholas Gainous, Rowan Piccaro and Dominic Piccaro all blow out their candles on February 22. A big HB on February 23 to Claire Ayraud, Elina Smith, and Amy Nicolaisen. Mardi Gras kids Sally Hensley, Don Hempel, and Addison Bogardus will party quite hardy on February 24. February 25 sees Jessie Dean dancin’ the b-day jig.
Equilibrium Fund has been short listed for a prestigious $1M Alcan Prize for Sustainability. The granting agency is out of Canada and The Equilibrium Fund gets a well deserved $15k just for making the shortlist. “We get short listed a lot, but we win a lot too,” says Erika Vohman, Director and creator of the award winning organization that successfully teaches women in Central American countries how to agriculturally sustain their forests, while feeding their families. For more info on the award visit Alcanprize.com or theequilibriumfund.org.

Has-Beens… This just in: All you Royal Flauschink Has-Beens’ presence is requested for the Mardi Gras parade this Tuesday, February 24 at 4:30 p.m. for the parade. Meet at the Depot please. The rest of your royal subjects drool at the opportunity to serve you. Is there a Mardi Gras polka? Iko Iko!

About town… Heather Biery just returned from San Francisco in continuing education in her acupuncture practice. Stanley the shaggy dog is happy, and we’re happy you’re home.
Amy Deskin and Mike Liggett are having a baby, due early June. They’ll keep the gender a surprise until then.
Jen and Brian Hawley are due in early May, and they’re having a boy.

Boardin’ for Riley… Glo Cunningham won that coveted snowboard at Riley Poor’s fundraiser a few weeks back. Glo laughed, “I will never use it so I’d like to sell it to the highest bidder and donate all the money to Riley.” Here’s your chance, oh you who salivated over this Soloman Driver 145 snowboard. Should I write a letter to the community? Phone Glo at 349-5729.

Coming Home… Sue Gellert, and her sister, ABG, are heading to southern China to bring home Sue’s new daughter, Hua Hua. They’ll be returning Friday, March 12. “I want to give her both a Chinese and American name so when she gets older she’ll have a choice”, Sue decided. She’ll also decide what that English name will be after she meets Hua Hua, who is 15 months old. The adoption process took about 4 years and must be accepted through an agency. Congratulations Sue! We can’t wait to welcome little Hua Hua to Crested Butte.

Transitions… Condolences to Ruta Hay whose mom, Maria Martell passed away January 27. Ruta just returned from a month in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she was spending time with her mother. “My mother was a strong believer in the power of the mind and conquering anything you put your mind to,” Ruta said. Stop by the Princess Wine Bar and give Ruta a big hug.

Life in the Shire… Last week on Magic Meadows Nordic trail, I pulled out my iphone to snap a shot of the surrounding beauty and in the process lost the Bluetooth earpiece that was also in that pocket. I immediately put the dilemma on KBUT’s Lost & Found announcements, but it had already started to snow. I figured my little bit of expensive techno was a goner… until the next day when I found it returned, placed gently on the seat of my 72 VW with no note and no one to thank. After a bit of sleuthing I discovered the angel who went to the trouble of seeking out my car and delivering the goods… Thank you so much, Wheels. Where else but the Butte would people take care of each other this way? I owe you a beer Wheels… I love my town.

Remember what happens in the Butte stays in the Butte… and probably Facebook. So unless you’re in the Witness Protection Program, I expect to hear from you… got gossip, events, births, travels, healings, alien abductions… rumors? Email the Weekly’s Girl About Town at dbelloise@gmail.com or call 275-5774. I’m waiting…
